The books partition should have a couple of directories in it. ".kobo" and ".kobo-images". Depending on the OS you are using, they might not be visible without changing options to see them. In Windows Explorer, that is choosing the option to see system files and folders. Though, they probably won't be hidden if you are using the command line. The purchased books are in the directory ".kobo/kepub".

You can put sideloaded books practically anywhere in the books partition. You shouldn't use the above as they should be reserved for Kobo purposes only. But, the problem with adding books to the card is getting the device to import them. Usually that happens when you disconnect the device. People have created ways to trigger this action, but, I don't use them. I am pretty sure that NickelMenu can do it, and I'm sure there is another method. The issue might be that they need to be installed, and that usually happens when the device is ejected. There is probably another way to do it, but, off the top of my head, I don't know how.

A brute force way to import the books is to sign out of the Kobo account on the device. That will trigger the setup and at the end of that, any sideloaded books are imported. As a once-off to get going, it will work, but, it is not something you would want to repeat.
