And here I was thinking I was the only one daft enough to have been down that rabbit warren, we must have taken a different fork in the protocol tunnels

I still have and occasionally use Hermann Shinagl's Link Shell Extension from those days

@Lauraq - have you watched the calibre videos, I loathe most instructional videos; but when I first installed calibre I found them very useful. Watch a segment, switch to calibre with a test library and try the feature - if you don't get it, repeat until you do…

And here's an experiment you can try, it demonstrates that the 'driver' of calibre is its database, not the file system.

Create a new library (BRTest) and add some books to it, close calibre, open the BRTest folder and delete the author and book title folders, do NOT delete the metadata.db file

Start calibre. The only thing that should be immediately obvious is the absence of cover images, but you should be able to search, sort, edit metadata etc, what you won't be able to do are operations that require the format files - such as convert, view, send to device etc.

When your done, switch to another library and use Library icon->Remove library->BRTest to remove the library from calibre's settings, you'll have to delete the BRTest folder using your file manager.
