As others noted - and I want to reiterate - Sci-Fi can be tough for the novice English speaker. This is a genre where authors often take great liberty with place names, character names, technical terminology, etc. Keep a dictionary on hand and don't be surprised if a word is made up.
Finally, the conversation about "pram" herein illustrates a great point: variability within the English language. Keep a pad and pencil handy and log words that seem unfamiliar.
