Tristan Palmgren "Quietus" is about an academic time traveller on a research trip to Europe during the Black Death, and a local monk. Its focus is more towards emotions and philosophy than engineering and warfare, so it may not be what you're looking for.
I think academic time travel is a niche subgenre all its own, though I like those books, too. If you haven't read the unfortunately titled The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O., I recommend it.
