For me, it was little things piling up over time. I loved my Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight. But the follow-up, the Nook Glowlight limited the amount of space for sideloading while also removing the SD card slot. That was a model I would not be buying. I bought a Kobo Aura instead.
The next model, the Glowlight Plus (2015) was great. Flush screen, 300ppi, waterproof and no segregated area for sideloading. But then B&N was playing games with their DRM and the ability to download books.
I did wind up buying a 2015 Plus and the next model, Glowlight 3. I do like their hardware a lot and really, I'm okay with their firmware. If the database could be accessed by Calibre so I could control tags and series externally, this user would have no complaints.
But I now buy my books from Amazon.
