I agree 100% . I really enjoyed Diana Gabaldon's 'Outlander' series. Historical Fiction slash Sci/Fi slash Medical slash Romance.

I mostly read fantasy and hate Mills & Boon soppy stuff, (although I thought I was in heaven when I found a hidden box of them in the attic at the age of 12 and secretly read the LOT).
George RR Martin's 'Ice and Fire' series, Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' Tad Williams 'Memory, Sorrow and Thorn' and of course OUTLANDER, are my all time favorite books. I'm busy with the Wheel of Time and enjoying it immensely so far...
