Unfortunately, it is a problem for nearly all e-ink screens. Most use a glass back-plane for the screen. That can be broken a lot easier than we would like. It can be from an impact, or to much twisting. And sometimes it isn't obvious, but, more an accumulation of damage over time.
There are a few devices, such as the Kobo Forma, that use a plastic back-plane. These are a lot more rugged. And noticeably lighter. But, also noticeably more expensive.
