For kindles that don't hibernate, I've been able to ssh in for days after it has gone to sleep without it leaving the sleep screen (provided it is not in USB mass storage mode. If wifi ssh is enabled I suppose you could ssh over wifi without it leaving sleep screen even with USBMS enabled, but I have never enabled ssh over wifi and don't know. But you would have to catch it when it is listening on wifi.)
When hibernating in airplane mode and USBMS disabled, I generally have to wake up the kindle to ssh in (and bye bye sleep screen.)
