I recently finished an epidemic novella myself,
A Prayer for the Dying by Stewart O’Nan. The setting was a diphtheria outbreak in post-Civil War Wisconsin. It was excellent; one of my favorite books this year. Terrifying to the extent that I think it qualified as horror.
