I’m not sure why Apple chose the requirement for iPhones with a FaceID, perhaps as yet another incentive to buy a newer phone. Albeit doing a color calibration on your TV isn’t worth buying a newer iPhone for by any stretch of the imagination. The newest iPhones cost more than my new 4K 50” TV!
I use a Youtube video (see below) to help me eyeball the color and general video settings. The video lasts 20 minutes, long enough to get most or all the settings adjusted in most cases. You can always rerun it too. The video is a simple TV test pattern to help you visualize how well your settings are working.
Each TV brand and/or system software type it runs is different, so it is best to search the internet for help related to the TV one owns. My Sony Bravia uses Android TV version 9. And of course each streaming device is using a different set up system. I can certainly see why a lot of people opt to pay an installer to set everything up for them.
