My DXG still works with Mobile (=Cellular in USA). They are unlikely to be turning off 3G here. Sadly it has no WiFi.
Portable rechargeable Mobile to WiFi hotspots have existed since maybe 2005, but rare then. I still have one in the attic somewhere that used a PCMCIA card for the mobile modem, so it was possible to upgrade the Linux in it for an early 4G modem before LTE was public (LTE is one of at least three 4G systems).
Amazon calls WiFi delivery, Whispersync. I keep WiFi off and use Download to PC and then USB, so as to have a backup.
I'd not buy ebooks from ANY company that didn't provide regular downloads. Without a real download it's a service, not a sale of a product.
