Well, honestly, they're less about the noise cancelling than the actual headphone quality. Which is very, very good. That they're also good at noise cancelling was a requirement, but what I was looking for were really good headphones that I could wear to listen to music while having to work in a noisy "pod" environment. Basic NC would have been sufficient, but I was pleasantly surprised at just how far NC has come in the 30 years since I bought a pair of early Bose headphones. Which had neither the sound quality, nor the NC quality that these do, and cost about as much in current dollars. (Though these are actually cheaper here in Canada than they are in the US. ) And yes, they were very much a splurge.

(BTW, if you want crazy expensive, look no further than the absolutely superlative Shure SL-846 earbuds.) I lust after them, but it's simply not ever going to be in the cards.)
