I would guess that your personal habits aren't relative. When I'm out and about, I see plenty of people looking at their phones, or Using wireless ear buds.

Personally, I have BT and Find My enabled all the time.

And if you are tracking your kid... iSomethings are ubiquitous enough, at least in the USA, and BT is popular enough, at least with the younger generation, that I would guess you can get a pretty good idea of where they are. I would strongly suspect that many/most kids when out and about, are "connected" somehow (they want messages, or email, or FB, or Instagram, Spotify, or...), be it BT, WiFi, or Cell signal and an AirTag would cross their path often enough.
