I am pretty sure that any time I have bought a book using the website, it has downloaded automatically to the device. But, it is possible a full sync is needed. It is possible that the details have been downloaded and then the overnight sync downloaded the book.

What I mean is that the full sync started by pressing Sync button or the automatic daily sync does everything. It should check for book status changes, get new books, covers, annotations and anything else that can be synced.

But, there are smaller syncs done when you use the device. Open a book and it will sync the status of the book. Put the device to sleep while reading or wake it and again, the status is synced. This syncs the reading location, but not any annotations.

The sync be started while navigating the device. If you go to the book list, or return to the home page, a sync can be started. I believe this will sync the book status and I think that means it gets the details of any new books, but, I don't think it will get the actual book. Note: There is a timer between these events. From memory, 30 minutes must elapse before the sync is done again.

If I do go to sync after buying a book on the website, I usually find the sync is already running by the time I get the point were I could tap the sync button. That is the last type above. It's possible that the timing for what happened for you meant that it was the last type of sync that was run. It could also be something like the first sync downloads the details and the second the book. Or there is a delay after buying it before you can get the book. I don't think this would be the case, but, I could see caching or archiving being involved so that less popular books have to be fetched from a secondary storage or something.

I'll have to pay more attention the next time I buy a book to see what happens.
