I still do screen captures until I get a confirmation somewhere - email or listing on the transactions. That confirmation number does mean something - they can't charge you a late payment fee because you have proof that you attempted to pay. Not your fault that their system is screwed up.
The only problem I've ever had is with Target auto-pay suddenly not working late last year. I was being charged a late payment fee. Contacted Target and probably the only time I got a slightly grumpy customer service person. Since she could see that my entire balance was paid by auto every month for a decade, I was refunded the late payment fee. Everything went ok, so I just assumed her slight grumpiness had nothing to do with me. Working from home isn't easy for everybody.
