The touch/stylus layer (wacom sensor) is behind the screen so it does not affect the display. Actually, the screen quality of the DR1000 is generally considered top notch and the best e-ink display currently available. The grayscale issues in this thread are, as Matthijs mentioned, related to the dithering in software which indeed leave room for improvement.
