Because the cost of living is higher in large metropolitan areas, wages are usually higher in those areas. A jewelry chain that also leased the jewelry space in department store in New York and New Jersey agreed to take over the leases in a department store chain in the Midwest. They wanted some of their managers and assistant managers to transfer out there. When they found out how much houses and rentals were in the Midwest most wanted to go. Then they found out that they would be taking a pay cut commensurate with the cost of living they all refused. This was in the late 1980's.
