I don't use identifiers at all and often delete even the default ones. The only time I want an identifier is in the case of a Kindle book with too small a cover. Then the Amazon identifier is useful for downloading a high-res Kindle cover. In other cases, the title and the author are usually enough for downloading a high-res cover.
I don't use the automatic metadata download. I fill my metadata in manually for each new book.
