I was curious so I purchased a less expensive book by the same publisher. That book is only made available in KFX format and uses a new form of KFX DRM that I have not seen previously.
As far as I can tell there is nothing special about the contents that would require KFX for rendering. The limitation to KFX format seems to be only for the enhanced DRM that it provides.

Yes. those people would be unable to read this book.
Apparently stronger DRM is more important to the publisher than flexibility of use by customers. Hopefully other publishers will not follow this lead.
