The serial number is in the SD card and hence in the image. It is set to all zeros. You can use a binary editor to set it in the image before writing it to the card. It is at offset 0x200. That starts with "SN-" followed by the serial number, which, for most devices includes the model number.

And while I recommend setting the serial number, it doesn't matter that much. It is only used in a few places and all the common functions seem to work with all zeros.
