Of course Colt .45 was the Apple of revolvers in the old West. More expensive, and a lot better advertizing. But actually, the .44-40 was used more, like IBM clones. There is a saying that "the .44-40 killed more game and more men that any cartridge in the West". Certainly open for debate, it's still made today, and many of the rifles you see in Italian westerns are chambered in .44-40. Still a good short range hunting round, up to about 150 meters or so.
