Bird Box by Josh Malerman. A horror apocalypse, it's not safe to go outside without a blindfold. Told in two threads, current and four years previously, and these are so cleverly constructed that the tension is unrelenting; I felt quite drained when I put it down. Certainly there are holes in the story but you never get time to think about them. All up, I thought this was very well done, although I'm a little ambivalent about the ending. A firm 4/5.
Do You Dream Of Terra-Two? by Temi Oh. In an alternative history some young adults get picked for a 23 year journey to another planet. I really wanted to like this, and for the first quarter or so I did, mostly, although I was starting to wonder if they'd ever get off Terra-One. But the middle third/half of the book really dragged - I mean really - and certain aspects of the end became quickly apparent. Plus there were a lot of things that jarred so that the unsatisfying conclusion was merely the final straw of disappointment. (The very last sentence, in the context of the book, was actually quite disturbing, which is perhaps the most interesting aspect of the book, although I'm guessing it was unintended.) On the other hand, I did actually finish it, so 2/5.
