If the time and date is badly out, due to flat battery, it can take up to a day to reset via WiFi.
It won't register or sync with the wrong date, but the web access to Amazon shop still works.
Only some Kindles let you fix the date via the menu. Some have a ;date setting syntax that works in the Search box. Others simply display it.
