I tend to read more with my Oasis 3 as the screen, buttons and performances are better. I simply forget the device with my Kindle, while I'm reminded I'm on a (slow) e-reader when I use the Libra.
If budget is tight, I would go with the Libra, if not, the Oasis 3 is a serious option.

I concur with your observations. The OP's experience with his/her Kindle + Calibre should be no different with the Oasis 3. Not only is the display (lighting), buttons, and performance better, it handles footnotes and highlighting much better. As the OP indicated he/she does a fair amount of highlighting on the Kindle it will be a frustrating experience with a Kobo. I wish Kobo would improve these last two fuctions.
