Because I don't need it and it just eats battery. I do turn wifi on once in a while when I want the firmware update (I don't bother with every update, just some of them). When I first started to use Kindles, I used direct downloading and syncing constantly. Then the problems started... poor formatting, stuck indexing, books not downloading and so on. I found it faster and easier to fix things with Calibre and just sideload everything from there.
Also I use custom font sizes (the font-ramp hack) on my Oasis and those don't work with direct downloads.
Just yesterday I tried to download a couple of old personal docs I had in my Kindle cloud. Nope... queuing, but not downloading, no matter what I tried. Eh. Back to Calibre and sideloading.
