Almost any modern author will be easier to read than Tolkien.

If you're looking for slightly simpler English, are you open to trying children's or middle grade/young adult books? ("Middle grade" are aimed at readers aged 8-12). There are many many choices - a few are: When You Reach Me, The Fourteenth Goldfish, The City of Ember, Mrs Frisby, The Little Prince, Sal and Gabi Break the Universe, Race to the Sun, Catching Teller Crow (sold as The Things She's Seen in the USA), the Percy Jackson series, Akata Witch, the Dark Is Rising series, the Sabriel series, Roald Dahl, Diana Wynne Jones (try the Chrestomanci series or Howl's Moving Castle), Neil Gaiman (Coraline, Stardust or The Graveyard Book), the Ranger's Apprentice books, the Hitchhiker's Guide series, Scott Westerfeld.
