British author Eric Knight is best remembered as the author of "Lassie Come-Home", the best selling sentimental animal novel; he also wrote the whimsical fantasy "Sam Small Flies again". (Both are in this Library). This novel shows just how versatile he was: it's a hard-boiled "noir" novel of the USA depression, authentic in style and downbeat in tone, and he wrote it in 1938, BEFORE the other two. Knight died in WW2.
