I prefer list view, the cover of the current book shows in the details panel and I prefer a text list to see more information on a single page.
I prefer the current method. I seldom want to see what is on the device other than if calibre thinks a book is on the device (checkmark or not in the main panel when a device is connected).
Again I prefer it on command. I don't need to lose a mass of screen space for something that I don't use all that often.
