It won't surprise me if one of the next two or three devices has a colour screen, but, that isn't why the option was added. The letterboxing was being done in black. Someone with a white Libra H2O wanted white letterboxing to match the bezel. And I think someone else wanted a grey or something. Adding the colour picker was fairly easy.

I have an update to the Kobo Utilities plugin ready for this as well. One thing you can do with this is use the colour picker to choose a colour from the screen. I found that if I was sending the cover for one book. choosing something from the cover worked well.
