OK, one last test.
BACK UP your entire configuration folder (NOT THE LIBRARY FOLDER), then remove it
Uninstall Calibre
reinstall Calibre (you might need to point it to your library if it is not in the default), it creates a fresh config folder-settings

Try the catalog tool now. There may have been a setting that was corrupt.
if there was no change , just restore the config folder (Calibre not running) and your settings will be as they were
