You did not say, but I take for granted that BOTH kindle and adapter ground are common... and that this is NOT a permanent issue (when power off-power on it works again for a while)

This is a shot in the dark, but are you sure that running from a battery is at a correct level? I would take my multimeter and measure the voltage between the kindle ground and the signal...It should be around 1.8 volt... 1.5 v would be low and maybe too low for your kindle
