You've never played Call of Cthulhu?
Since exposure to Cthulhu or pretty much ANY of the Lovecraftian Ancient Gods can strip your sanity, a sanity roll is done to determine how much if any sanity you lose. This also applies for situations such as tripping over the mutilated corpse of a close friend chanting "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn." ( "In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming." )
