The WiFi connection choices for downloading books are:
  • Kobo store - Means you have to buy books from Kobo. But, does have syncing for books from libraries via Overdrive.
  • Browser - While it isn't a great browser, you can get to the calibre server and download books one at a time. Clumsy but works.
  • Builtin syncing with Dropbox - But only on the Forma.
  • KOReader - Has support for Calibre wireless protocol that Calibre Companion uses. Great if you use KOReader. Not sure if it is good with nickel.
  • UNCaGED - Again supports the Calibre wireless protocol but, is intended to load books into nickel.

There is another one that has syncing to Dropbox or some other cloud providers. The name escapes me at the moment and I'm not sure of the status. And of course, as soon as I post this, someone will remind me of the name and the other methods I have forgotten

You would also be able to use telnet to the device and then FTP or similar to copy the books. You would then need to trigger nickel to import the books. I think NickelMenu has a method to do this.

I have no personal experience beyond syncing to the Kobo store and occasional testing of the browser. I know the other methods exist and work, but, haven't had any need to try them.
