News and information is everywhere - good filters of the news is I guess what we are really talking about here. Sites like Digg are great ... in terms of giving a common consensus from groupX (Digg readers) - what newspapers (actually newspapers editirs) do is provide an opinionated filter on the news, we choose a filter that suits our personal opinion, or challenges it in a way we find comfortable.
Good editors are goldust - they attract readers, and therefore advertising. Newspapers as institutions are sort of irrelevant - they are just a medium. Newsagencies are the ones who employ the editors - and these great editors will be deployed on the best medium to attract advertising ... until - we can predict user behavious so well at both a general and a niche level that we can do away with them (at the popular level, pro-ams already own the niche news). OhmyNews is a great example of a hybrid, they still need editors as a filter to set a tone...
Vampyre - I second that thought - press reader SW on the Iliad would be great!
