Finally decided which was best
Well, Kindles, obviously. Because adding books purchased elsewhere is easy, and Amazon seamlessly syncs between kindle devices. Even the books emailed in. Borrowing books from the library is super easy, and Amazon is competitive for books you need to purchase. Any lighting fits my need, so no preference there. I am unconcerned about water damage, although it is good that some are resistant. All have enough storage for me.
But which Kindle? I have 3, a Paperwhite, a Voyage, and an Oasis 2. One each for Home, work, and briefcase so I always have one nearby. I have spent 2 years using each of them, and am now certain which one works best for me.
The loser: the Paperwhite. Because the power button is on the bottom where your fingers support the device one handed. This could be remedied by allowing the text to be read with the device upside down, but that is not a feature. There are no page turn buttons.
The runner up: The Oasis. Awesome physical page turn buttons, but only on one side. Sure, the text rotates quickly, but it still is still less convenient than buttons on both sides. Asymetric design does not lay flat unless in a cover.
The Winner: Kindle Voyage. Slim, light, and sleek. Page turns on both sides. Lays flat. Great text clarity. Power button is on the back away from supporting fingers. Only downside is the thin Bezel for my fat fingers.
Early on, the Oasis gave the Voyage a good challenge for the number one spot, but holding that slim, sleek, and light Voyage with the great screen is just too good! Effortless, unconscious hand transfers because of the page turn buttons on both sides. Never an accidental power down, even without a case. It also appears that user replacement of the battery is not difficult, though I have not need to replace it yet.
I have been waiting for a voyage update for 3 years, and it does not seem to be coming. So today I went out and bought a refurbished Voyage while they are easy and cheap to acquire, just so I could have a backup.
