If I understand what you want correctly, you can import the list of identifiers as single field csv file using the Import List plugin. All you have to do is to match them to the correct column e.g identifier:url, and use the identifier matching. You do not need to update the book metadata, just go through the wizard to the end, and it will mark all matched books.
