The import screen was not showing at all, btw. The Kobo also takes a relatively long time (30-45s) to reboot after disconnecting from USB.
I did not change anything in the configuration, though. I will try a few more things based on your suggestions.

It could be the card size. There were discussions about this a long time ago. From memory, for the Glo, 32GB worked all the time, but 64GB would depend on the card.
For the book partition, I don't resize this until after it is in the device. I use the partition resizing from
Magic Memory Upgrade Mod once I know it is working OK.
