Actually you should be using 1.8v, as per this thread:

I believe some have managed to do it with 3v, but the board is not designed for it and you risk damaging it.

Keep in mind that some of these serial adapter boards can be jumpered to use a supplied voltage source. That allows you to get the 1.8v from another wire to the Kindle.
