Ah, it is as I thought then! So, I download the Kobo root file (.tgz), extract it (I wonder if maybe that's where I'm going wrong but then how will any files be read if I don't) and copy the extracted file. I then right click on my kobo main device drive and look for my .kobo folder and paste the extracted file into the .kobo folder. Then I eject my kobo and let it reboot and then... nothing changes. When it hasn't worked, I've gone into the .kobo folder and put the KoboRoot folder into trash and tried it again.

When you say one-click packages, is that different to the KoboRoot.tgz folder or is it the same thing?

Thank you all for your guidance, really appreciate it!
Update (sorry, don't know how to edit posts on here): I reset my kobo, found the one-click package and gah, I *still* can't install it. If I understand the instructions, it's saying extract the file into the main kobo folder that comes up when you plug it in but when I try to extract the file to there, I get a message about there being an "error identifying a writable folder. Try moving the archive to another volume". When I try to copy and paste in and then move the script to that folder, it says there aren't any packages to install. I'm so frustrated, I've never had a problem when I was jailbreaking my kindle and that had more files to play with than this. I'm determined to get this working.
