line breaks in pdf TOC

I have converted an epub file to pdf with calibre's converter. The TOC on the end has some lengthy <h1> entries which are so long that they must wrap lines. The page number shows correctly on the second line. The line sometimes breaks at awkward places, even sometimes creates hyphens. I am searching for a method to break the line where I want it to break. I tried several things, but nothing seems to work, including editing of the nav.xhtml and toc.ncx and tweaking the 'edit the toc' feature. Of course, it is possible to truncate the <h1> but sometimes the great length makes good sense. For example: "This is the main Chapter Heading (it is about the following things)" Best regards, Pop
