I also found some of the central stories unlikeable . The “Peter Parley” tale was particularly so. “ A Mysterious Visitor” certainly gives a vivid picture of Victorian life but the elements of racism and colonial arrogance such as the contemptuous reference to the natives of India as “half-caste” were hard to stomach.

However, even for stories I disliked, the editor’s introductory remarks were always worth reading.
