Trying to maintain compatibility in the linux world really isn't the app developers job, it's the distro's job. Given the vast number of ditributions out there if I started worrying about whether every change I make is compatible with evry linux distro, I'd never get anything done. And if your problem is with glibc being too recent, downgrading to 0.5.2 wont help since if I rebuild 0.5.2 it will also use the new glibc.
