Thanks for your help! The images are all separate files; there are 89 of them, with the largest being ~700kb. Most are very small, ~50kb, though.
Maybe there are too many internal files? Alongside the 89 images, there are 640 text files (each around ~20kb). I'm not sure if that falls into an acceptable range.
I did have some luck after using kepubify — the resulting kepub was able to be opened on my Kobo — but I would like to fix the ePub since it's a more universal format. I'm not very familiar with the kepub format however, so I don't know what it really changed to make it work. I think it does tell me that the number of files is not the problem, since the ePub and kepub both have the same amount, but then I'm at a loss for what to fix.

What happens if you do a conversion from epub to epub? Sometimes a Calibre conversion helps in such cases.
