In the book, did you put all the images into a single internal file? If so, it is probably hanging while trying to render the file with all those images. I have tested this and it rebooted the device as described. Putting the images in separate files, or in smaller groups will work.

Thanks for your help! The images are all separate files; there are 89 of them, with the largest being ~700kb. Most are very small, ~50kb, though.
Maybe there are
too many internal files? Alongside the 89 images, there are 640 text files (each around ~20kb). I'm not sure if that falls into an acceptable range.
I did have some luck after using kepubify — the resulting kepub was able to be opened on my Kobo — but I would like to fix the ePub since it's a more universal format. I'm not very familiar with the kepub format however, so I don't know what it really changed to make it work. I think it does tell me that the number of files is not the problem, since the ePub and kepub both have the same amount, but then I'm at a loss for what to fix.
