Okay, so... as there's plenty of time for the return, I decided to give plugging it in another chance. And lo and behold, it boots up Nickel just fine, asking me whether I want to connect it.
So... hooray for potentially generating less e-waste?
Time to hunt for logs, so we can find out what happened and judge whether this device is reliable enough to keep. I'll edit and add them to this post, suggestions remain very welcome of course.
