I guess the only thing left to do would be to get a $20 USD USB-serial thingy and try my luck with soldering and whatnot to downgrade, but at that price point, I'd rather consider buying another kindle at $85-ish when it's on black friday discount or similar.

Soldering is not totally required, there are other approaches. You can keep an eye on eBay for good used kindles, I have bought several there over the years, or see if Amazon is selling any refurbs at a discount, which I have also bought.
