I'm wondering if that's due to the fact that the Kobo drivers aren't supported in my older version of Calibre. So what I'm wondering is, can I now get the new version of Calibre at still have control over my books?
There is a pre-release DeDRM plugin version 7.0.3. It's main purpose is to fix things to remove the DRM from PDF. But there are other code changes for Python 3. I've used the 7.0.1 version and it seems to work with ePub, Mobi, KF8. I've not tested it with any other format

So the answer is Calibre 5.8.1 is safe to install.
