"Anywhere" obviously doesn't mean from any legal store as according to everything you have said it is illegal to read those books on anything other than the device sold by that store.
And you are going to have to prove the price. As stated above, it is impossible to get these Android e-ink devices here in Australia at anywhere near the price of either the Kobo or Kindle ereaders. As it is perfectly legal for me to put books I have sourced elsewhere on them, how can it possible that I will "pay more in total"?
And before you say anything: I am completely happy to pay more for a good quality product. The problem will be that you and I have different opinions of what "good quality product" means.

What does that mean? My Kobo devices include a browser. I can use that to download books directly from the web.
And the devices you mention above, these are ones you have personal knowledge and have used?
