To get back on topic, once setup correctly, you can buy eBooks from Amazon or ePub, remove DRM if any, and convert to the format of your choice for reading on the device of your choice.

The reason I suggested the Kobo Forma is for the 8" screen and the many more choices of font sizes. In the US, the Forma costs $249.99. A Kindle Oasis costs $279.99. So you are paying more for a Reader with a 7" screen then a Reader with an 8" screen. The Kobo (IMHO) has better firmware then the Kindle. From what I've been reading on MR, the Kindle has gotten a bit confusing with the latest firmware because of how they've implemented their new series feature.
