This is probably old news to most, but I figured this out today after some trial and error. Thought it might help someone out in the future.

You have to change the "USB used for" setting
BEFORE launching Calibre. Changing this setting puts the Kindle Fire into MTP mode, allowing for file transfers. Calibre interfaces with devices using MTP.
It seems that the 9th Gen Kindle Fire OS always defaults "USB used for" to "Do Nothing" so you need to change the setting each time you connect the Kindle to your PC before launching Calibre. If you have already launched Calibre, simply close and relaunch after changing the "USB used for" setting.
